As both a dedicated dog sitter and a proud dog owner, I’ve utilized pet sitting services extensively. While the service itself is excellent, the accompanying mobile application presents significant user experience challenges that detract from an otherwise valuable platform. This review, from the perspective of an experienced app user and former app industry professional, highlights critical areas for improvement within the Rover app.

The Rover app exhibits several shortcomings in its profile management system, causing frustration for users trying to accurately represent their needs and preferences. Firstly, changes made to sitter profiles are frequently not saved. When a user meticulously updates their information and taps “Done,” the expectation is that these modifications will be registered. However, this is often not the case, leading to wasted effort and a lack of confidence in the app’s functionality.

A particularly critical oversight is the handling of the “Friendly with Dogs?” setting. When users select “Depends,” this crucial information is not displayed on the dog’s profile for potential sitters. This omission is deeply problematic, as a dog’s compatibility with other canines is paramount for ensuring a safe and harmonious sitting experience. This lack of clarity can lead to unsuitable matches and potential conflicts.

Furthermore, the app lacks straightforward options for updating one’s profile name and setting multiple dog owners. The current design only allows for a single owner’s name to be displayed. This presents an inconvenience when both owners are communicating with pet sitters, as it creates ambiguity about who is addressing them. In one instance, the app automatically assigned my husband’s name to my pet sitter profile during setup, despite him creating our dog owner profile. This prevented me from entering my own name, further complicating the process.

Navigation and Messaging Challenges

The app’s navigation, particularly for accessing past messages and archived information, is unintuitive and confusing. The icon located in the top left corner, intended to switch between “Past/Archived” and “Pending/Upcoming” views, is not standard and takes considerable time to decipher. As an experienced app user, even I struggled to locate messages with a previous dog sitter. The current system requires users to remember a non-obvious action to switch views, rather than offering a simple, unified inbox with an archiving option, which is a more common and user-friendly approach across most applications.

Developer Response and Future Outlook

The developer’s response acknowledges these difficulties and assures users that an update addressing various issues is in development. While this is a positive step, the immediate user experience remains hampered by these persistent problems. The suggestion to contact customer service for immediate support is noted, but the core functionality of the app should ideally be more robust and intuitive from the outset.
