Toilet Training Your Cat: A 7-Step Guide

Toilet training a cat can seem like a daunting task, but with patience and the right approach, it’s achievable for most felines. This method focuses on gradually transitioning your cat from their litter box to the toilet, minimizing stress and potential accidents along the way. This toilet training process aims to gently mold your cat’s behavior, leading to a cleaner home for you and a more natural habit for your pet.

Step One: Relocate the Litter Box

Begin by moving your cat’s current litter box to a location directly next to the toilet. Ensure your cat is comfortable using the litter box in this new spot and leave it there for as long as you feel is necessary for them to adjust. It’s crucial to proceed at your cat’s pace. If they become confused or stressed, they might seek alternative, less desirable places to relieve themselves, which can be difficult to correct later. Patience is key throughout this entire process.

Step Two: Gradually Elevate the Litter Box

Once your cat is accustomed to the litter box being next to the toilet, start gradually raising its height. Each time you increase the elevation, incrementally remove a small amount of material from underneath the litter box. You can use stacks of newspapers or phone books, ensuring they are stable and won’t shift when your cat jumps on or off the box.

Step Three: Proximity to the Toilet

Continue moving the litter box, this time inching it closer to the toilet each day. The goal is to have the litter box positioned directly over the toilet seat. Simultaneously, reduce the amount of litter in the box. Aim for a thin layer, no more than one inch deep, as you get closer to the toilet.

Step Four: Introduce a Training Box

Replace the traditional litter box with a specialized “training box.” This training box should be sturdy enough to support your cat’s weight. You have a couple of options here: you can purchase a commercial training system or create your own. To make a DIY training box, you can tape a piece of wax paper or an aluminum pan securely over the toilet seat. Add flushable litter to this makeshift box, then lower the toilet seat to hold it in place.

Pro-Tip: Clean out the training box after each use. Adding a sprinkle of catnip to the clean litter can also help associate the new location with their familiar toileting routine.

Step Five: Create an Opening

Now it’s time to acclimate your cat to using the toilet bowl itself. Start by cutting a small hole, about one inch in diameter, in the center of the wax paper or aluminum pan you used in the previous step. Gradually increase the size of this opening over time. Concurrently, decrease the amount of flushable litter used in the pan. The ultimate aim is to have no litter remaining when the cover is eventually removed.

Step Six: Encourage Flushing (or Flush for Them)

Once your cat is consistently using the toilet with minimal or no litter, begin flushing the toilet after each of their uses. This helps them associate the action with waste disposal.

Pro-Tip: While cats can be trained to flush, it’s generally advised not to teach them this specific action. Some cats become fascinated with flushing, leading to excessive water usage and waste.

Step Seven: Reward Success

Positive reinforcement is crucial for successful toilet training a kitten. Whenever your cat successfully uses the toilet, offer them a treat and praise. This positive association will encourage them to repeat the behavior. If your cat seems hesitant about the water in the bowl, adding a small amount of litter to the water can help them connect the smell to their usual litter box, easing their apprehension.
