Remember, we welcome new animals daily, so if you don’t find your perfect match on your first visit, please return. It’s important to note that completing the form does not secure a specific dog or guarantee adoption. The form remains valid for six months and applies to one animal adoption.
KHS Adoption Centers and Hours
KHS operates two convenient adoption centers:
- East Campus: Located at 1000 Lyndon Lane, Louisville, KY 40222. You can visit to meet adoptable animals Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Adoption applications are processed until 30 minutes before closing.
- Sam Swope Pet Treatment & Lifesaving Center (Main Campus): Located at 241 Steedly Drive, Louisville, KY 40214. Adoptable dogs are available for viewing Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Adoption applications are accepted until 30 minutes before closing.
Adoption Fees and Requirements
When adopting a dog from the Kentucky Humane Society, you can expect to pay an adoption fee that varies by animal. In addition to the adoption fee, Jefferson County residents are required to pay a $10.50 Jefferson County License Fee, which serves as proof of rabies vaccination. KHS also offers a sturdy leash and collar for $10.00 for canines aged 5 months and older. Your adoption fee directly supports KHS’s mission to save more lives, making a significant impact on the welfare of other animals in their care.
Meeting Your Adoptable Dog
KHS features a real-time updated website where you can view photos and profiles of their adoptable dogs. Each profile includes the dog’s name, location, age, breed, and a link to their specific adoption details. When you click on a dog’s photo, you’ll be directed to their individual page for more information. The website is updated continuously, meaning that as soon as an animal is adopted, they are removed from the site, and new animals are added regularly.
Understanding “In Training” Dogs
You might notice some dogs are labeled as “in training.” This designation is given to pups who require a little extra support and understanding as they adjust to a new home. The KHS behavior team works closely with these dogs to address specific needs, such as shyness or mild anxiety. Adopting an “in training” dog comes with the benefit of a tailored counseling session with KHS experts.
