Volunteer with Pug Nation Rescue of Los Angeles: A Comprehensive Guide

If you have a deep affection for Pugs and a desire to contribute to the well-being of homeless Pugs, joining the volunteer team at Pug Nation Rescue of Los Angeles is a rewarding opportunity. Volunteers are integral to our mission, providing essential care, assisting staff, introducing adoptable Pugs to potential adopters, and supporting various aspects of our organization’s operations. This guide answers frequently asked questions to help you understand the process and requirements of volunteering with us.

Getting Started with Pug Nation Volunteer Program

To begin your journey as a Pug Nation volunteer, follow these steps:

  1. Complete the Volunteer Application: The first step is to submit your application electronically through our website. We do not offer or process paper applications for efficiency.
  2. Attend a Mandatory Orientation: After your application is reviewed, you will be contacted via email with instructions on how to register for our new volunteer orientation. This session is crucial for understanding our mission, programs, and the specific operational procedures necessary for the safety and care of our Pugs. Orientations are typically held on a Sunday afternoon at our facility in Gardena, CA, and last approximately 90 minutes. We usually schedule one orientation per month, and pre-registration is required as sessions often reach capacity. Walk-ins are not permitted.
  3. Begin Volunteering: Following your orientation, you will gain access to our online volunteer signup page. Here, you can schedule your volunteer shifts and begin contributing your time and compassion.

Volunteer Requirements and Expectations

Pug Nation has specific requirements to ensure the safety and well-being of both our volunteers and the Pugs in our care.

  • Age Requirement: All volunteers must be at least 16 years old and capable of working independently. This age restriction is in place due to the nature of the tasks involved and the safety protocols for our Pugs.
  • Prior Experience: While formal experience with animal rescue or owning a Pug is not mandatory, we do assume that you are comfortable around dogs and have a general understanding of the Pug breed.
  • Community Service: Please note that Pug Nation does not verify or sign off on community or school service hours. Our focus is on training and retaining long-term, committed volunteers who are passionate about our cause.
  • Scheduling: After orientation, you must sign up in advance for any volunteer shifts through our online portal. We welcome a limited number of volunteers daily between 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM. Admittance outside of these hours is generally not permitted unless specifically requested.
  • Guests and Companions: All individuals at the facility must be registered volunteers who have completed the application and orientation process, and have signed up for a specific shift. Please do not bring friends or family members as guests.

Beyond the Gardena Facility: Other Volunteer Opportunities

While our Gardena facility is a primary hub for volunteer activities, Pug Nation also offers various other opportunities to get involved:

  • Adoption Fairs: We regularly host adoption fairs at Tailwaggers in West Hollywood. These events are vital for showcasing our adoptable Pugs to the public and finding them loving forever homes.
  • Community Events: Pug Nation participates in numerous community events throughout the year. These events require dedicated volunteers to assist with various tasks, from setting up to interacting with potential adopters. You can find upcoming dates on our calendar.

Staying Informed About Volunteer Needs

We utilize an online portal to manage all volunteer needs and scheduling. All current volunteer opportunities for the month are posted on this page. We encourage our volunteers to regularly check the online portal and self-schedule for shifts that fit their availability. There is no need to download a separate app or pay a fee to access the signup website; it is accessible via desktop or mobile browsers.

Special Arrangements for Groups

Pug Nation Rescue of Los Angeles is not always able to accommodate one-time volunteer group requests due to our ongoing operational needs. However, we do review such requests on a case-by-case basis, depending on current projects and the specific assistance a group can provide. If your corporate or school group is interested in a one-time volunteer opportunity or can offer project assistance, please email info@pugnationla.org to discuss possibilities.

Volunteering with Pug Nation is a chance to make a tangible difference in the lives of Pugs in need. Your compassion, time, and dedication are invaluable to our mission.
