Embarking on the journey of breeding Maine Coons is an exciting venture, often accompanied by a crucial early decision: whether to acquire a male stud first or a female cat. While opinions may vary among seasoned breeders, sharing personal experiences can offer valuable insights for newcomers. This exploration delves into the considerations and emotional landscape surrounding this choice, drawing from one breeder’s firsthand account.
My own breeding path began in early 2017, initially connecting with a well-regarded breeder who offered mentorship. However, a feeling of unease led me to sever ties, a decision I later found validated as the breeder’s cattery encountered health issues. This experience underscored the importance of thoroughly vetting breeders and their cats’ health histories, lessons learned early in my journey.
Will a Maine Coon Stud Spray in the House?
In September 2017, my solid white male, Omega, joined my household. At this point, the prospect of breeding remained uncertain due to the absence of female cats. A significant concern was the potential for a male cat to spray indoors, a common behavior associated with unneutered males. These unanswered questions created a significant hesitation, preventing me from moving forward at that time.
Ultimately, I made the decision to alter Omega. This is a decision I now regret, though it didn’t result in any negative consequences for my breeding program. At the time, I felt adrift and unsure of my next steps. Omega has since grown into a magnificent cat and would have undoubtedly been a superb Maine Coon stud. However, his neutering was irreversible. While he is now a cherished pet, the missed opportunity for him to contribute to my breeding program remains a point of reflection. This was, perhaps, my first misstep as a breeder, though not a damaging one.
Which Comes First, the Boy or the Girl?
Following this, a clarity emerged, both mentally and emotionally, propelling me forward with renewed purpose. My focus shifted to acquiring a female Maine Coon with breeding rights, a pursuit that proved challenging within the United States. Consequently, I turned my attention to Europe, where I discovered Catsvill County’s Ursula Olegavna. She became the foundation of my Maine Coon Queen lineage, imported at six months old and beginning her life at Sassy Koonz Maine Coon Cattery.
In my experience, the female Maine Coon was acquired first.
Time seemed to accelerate, and soon Ursula entered her heat cycle. Her cycles occurred consistently every three weeks, yet I still lacked a suitable male for her. A sense of urgency grew, fueled by the understanding that prolonged cycles without mating could increase the risk of conditions like Pyometra in females. This led me to approach other breeders about using their males for a single mating. This request, however, was not easily granted due to breeding restrictions or the inherent risks involved in allowing an unfamiliar cat into their cattery, especially for a new breeder with no established reputation.
Simultaneously, I intensified my search for a male Maine Coon to incorporate into my program. My paramount concern was the health and vitality of my cats, leading me to be exceptionally discerning. With time becoming a critical factor, I dedicated myself to an exhaustive overnight search, determined to find a kitten that met breed standards, was healthy, and would eventually become my Maine Coon Stud. Persistence eventually paid off when I found “Illuminati,” a male Maine Coon kitten. While he required time to mature into a breeding adult, his acquisition was a significant step, having passed all my health and breed standard evaluations.
The Maine Coon Breeder That I’ll Never Forget
Everything happens for a reason, and the arduous search for a stud for Ursula led to a profoundly impactful connection. A special Maine Coon breeder, whose privacy I respect and therefore will not name here, graciously allowed me to mate Ursula with one of her magnificent males. I eagerly anticipate sharing a photo of him once Ursula’s pregnancy is confirmed. This breeder holds a special place in my heart for numerous reasons, and our bond is affirmed through weekly expressions of gratitude.
Cultivating relationships with other Maine Coon Breeders is crucial. This community is small and tightly knit, and breaking into it can be challenging. However, with genuine intentions and a demonstrated commitment to reputable breeding practices, one can forge lasting relationships with exceptional individuals.
To Sum Things Up: Get Your Maine Coon Stud First!
Reflecting on this experience, the most profound challenge stemmed from a lack of independence. Having to rely on others, particularly when it came to a critical aspect like breeding, was disconcerting. The absence of my own stud to mate with Ursula placed me in a difficult predicament, with her cycling every three weeks without a suitable partner. This situation caused considerable stress and sleepless nights.
Had I prioritized acquiring the Maine Coon Stud first, I would have possessed the autonomy to determine the timing and selection of the mating. This proactive approach would have significantly mitigated the feeling of helplessness. For aspiring and new Maine Coon breeders, the recommendation is clear: secure your male cat first. Learning from my experience, a female in heat without a readily available mate can be emotionally taxing. My male Maine Coon is now settled and fully equipped in his “Sassy Apartment,” ensuring he will be ready when Ursula, or any future female, is prepared for breeding.
