We are writing this petition with heavy hearts, as pet owners who have tragically lost beloved companions due to consuming Retriever Hi-Protein dog food, purchased from Tractor Supply. Our once happy and healthy dogs experienced a rapid decline in health after being introduced to this particular diet. Despite our best efforts to save them, the damage was too severe for their bodies to overcome.
This is not the first time a product from the Retriever brand has raised serious concerns. In April 2020, a recall was issued for their “Bites and Bones Adult Complete Nutrition Savory Chicken Flavor” dog food. This product was found to contain dangerously high levels of aflatoxin, a toxic substance produced by certain molds that can lead to fatal liver damage in dogs. Symptoms associated with aflatoxin poisoning include lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, and a yellowish tint to the eyes or gums.
Given this alarming history and our own devastating personal experience with Retriever Hi-Protein dog food, we believe immediate action is crucial to prevent further tragedies. We implore Tractor Supply to immediately discontinue selling this potentially dangerous product. We owe this not only to the beloved pets who have already suffered but also as a vital preventative measure for all other pets who may be at risk.
The concerning experiences shared by other customers on the Tractor Supply website highlight the urgent need for this petition. These reviews, credited to the individuals who shared them, paint a disturbing picture:
“I recently tried searching other places for dog food. I came across tractor supply having really big bags for cheap. I don’t think dog food should be so expensive. They need to eat too. Anyways we got it and slowly weaned her into it with her regular vet verified soft food and even her old food Blue Buffalo. She is my service dog and very well trained. I have now come home several days in a row to her bleeding and projectile pooping all in her cage and on the walls. At first it seemed like she was doing it on purpose because she stopped warning me she needed to go out so I was angry but now my baby can’t poop without whining in severe pain. Thanks for nothing. I have to take her to the vet now and I can’t even take this dog food back. I have to scrape my pockets to make sure she is going to be okay.” – Laurie13
“I found mold in the dog food twice now. The bag stays in the house and the whole bag is fed within 3 days to my hunting dogs. So I know the food isn’t getting wet or messed up in my house to cause it. There will be a layer of green mold throughout the dog food and a bunch of it! The first time I thought it was a mess up till it happened again. Had to through it out.” – Taylor944
“My dog started vomiting and severe diarrhea a day latter he was dead it’s been a few people lately that can contest to this in my area that had the same issue” – CJmatt
“I’ve use this product for over two years now, but lately the kibble looks different like if they mixed with another brand, to the point that all my dogs have some type of diarrhea or soft stool. Every time I open a new bag its a surprise because I don’t know what to expect, again sometimes the kibble looks dark and sometimes comes mixed with other color like yellowish color. Hopefully the manufacturer can fix the issue.” – Los Gorillas
“I’ve used this food for a long time and it’s always been pretty good for the relatively affordable price, but for the last 4 weeks in a row, I’ve gone and picked up my dog food only to open it and find large clumps of mold in the bag. I understand that times are hard right now and companies are trying to cut corners to maximize profit, but poisoning my dogs should not even be an option. Aren’t there laws and regulations that prevent this kind of thing? For crying out loud, if the company wants to save money all they have to do is stop putting food coloring in the food. The dog doesn’t care what color it is. Selling poisonous food is not acceptable.” – Angrydogmom
“I’ve been feeding this brand to my golden for almost 3 years and I will never buy this brand again. I opened up a fresh bag of food today and found maggots. Check your food!!” – GoldenMom035674
“The ingredients has kolbolt not good! Also my dog wasn’t gaining weight on this dog food that’s when I noticed it had metal in it! Lovey local tractor supply amd the customer service. But this dog food should be pulled from the shelf due to the metal in it.” – Hopethismessagesavesadog
“Made all my dogs have a upset stomach. I will be switching back to Purina” – Pitmom55555
“My latest bag looked like the cheaper mini chinks but all dark brown, I wrote to the company and they didn’t bother to respond, very disappointed with the consistency of this product which is a shame as I spend a decent amount of money at this store and my animals used to love this food, now they just kind of knock it all over. I see another reviewer has the same issue!” – Shelly1980
“Moldy Dog Food!” – MLopez13
“If you love your dog do NOT buy this. Our family just lost 3 dogs and one is at the vet now. It comes back to the dog food due to Aflatoxins.” – Dog lover1234
“Have been feeding Retriever Hi Protein for years. Last two bags have been different, shape and smell. Dogs are off their feed and pen clean up is terrible. I’m done.” – Cray67
“We’ve fed our pack of dogs this food for over 10 years and they loved it. We just bought two 50lb bags and the dogs won’t touch the stuff. It doesn’t look the same and, obviously it isn’t the same. We will have to return these two bags and find a new food our dogs will eat.” – BTCatz
“Item pictured is not what you receive in the store. The item has been changed and contains both red and yellow food dyes and the flavor is not quite the same nutritional content is completely different under the same brand. Now I have a 50 lb bag of trash. This was my first and last purchase at tractor supply.” – unhappy
