Embarking on outdoor adventures with pets can be a rewarding experience, and for Aina Stormo, her 2-year-old long-haired cat, Jesper, is the purr-fect companion for exploring the stunning Norwegian landscapes. From snow-dusted forests to shimmering waters, Jesper embodies the spirit of adventure, proving that cats are just as capable as dogs when it comes to embracing the great outdoors. This feature delves into how Jesper became an accomplished adventure cat and what makes his journeys so special.
From Kittenhood to the Great Outdoors
Jesper’s journey into adventure began when Aina Stormo adopted him as a kitten. Recognizing their shared love for travel, Aina decided to acclimate Jesper to life on the road. “We discovered that this was something he thought was fun to experience,” Aina shares, explaining how Jesper’s enthusiasm led them to gradually introduce him to various challenges, including hiking, skiing, tracking, and swimming. This early exposure, starting when Jesper was just three months old, laid the foundation for his remarkable capabilities. Aina emphasizes Jesper’s natural intelligence and smart problem-solving skills, which made the training process both rewarding and inspiring.
Jesper’s Favorite Adventures
While Jesper enjoys a variety of outdoor activities, his true paradise is found on fishing trips. The lure of the water and the thrill of the catch captivate him. He also frequently accompanies Aina and her family while they train horses, often resting in a basket attached to the bicycle’s handlebars during cycling excursions. Jesper’s unique lifestyle has even garnered a dedicated following on Facebook, where a special page showcases his diverse activities, challenging the notion that cats are not as adventurous as dogs.
Skiing with a Cat: A Unique Challenge
Skiing with Jesper presents a unique set of challenges that require skill and attentiveness. Aina describes the necessity of quick stops and good balance, especially since Jesper often prefers to walk directly in the ski tracks, making it difficult for her to navigate. “He is so little so I do what’s the best for him, and I must be careful so I do not run over the cat with my skis,” she explains. Due to his limited speed downhill, Jesper often rides in a backpack or on Aina’s shoulder. To prevent his fur from accumulating snow, which can be uncomfortable and unhealthy, Aina always carries a backpack for him to rest in when needed.
Braving the Cold
Jesper is well-equipped for the cold with his thick winter coat. However, Aina remains vigilant, frequently checking his ears and paws for signs of discomfort. If Jesper feels too cold, he will signal his need to rest in his backpack, which is lined with a cozy wool blanket for extra warmth.
Training and Gear for the Adventure Cat
Jesper has been trained to perform various tricks, including sitting, lying down, and giving paws. Aina has also trained him in tracking, further showcasing his capabilities. For their excursions, they rely on a Puppia harness, which provides the best fit for Jesper. He also has his own specialized backpack, allowing him to carry his own snacks, adding to his sense of independence on hiking trips.
The Joys and Realities of Adventuring with a Cat
The most significant benefit of adventuring with Jesper, according to Aina, is the deepening of their bond and Jesper’s increased trust. These experiences allow Jesper to adapt to new environments, significantly boosting his self-confidence. However, Aina also acknowledges the inherent nature of cats: “A cat is a cat — not a dog. If Jesper doesn’t want to walk he really doesn’t want to walk.” In such instances, Jesper readily takes to his backpack, content to observe the world from a comfortable vantage point.
Cherished Memories
Among Aina’s most treasured memories are the serene fishing trips taken in the evenings. With the campfire crackling and darkness enveloping the surroundings, Jesper sits contentedly with them, embodying the role of their “best buddy in fur.” These quiet moments together are particularly special for the duo.
Advice for Aspiring Adventure Cat Owners
For those inspired to train their own adventure cats, Aina offers crucial advice: start training indoors by getting the cat accustomed to wearing a harness before venturing outside. Progress should be gradual, with plenty of positive reinforcement through snacks and encouragement. “The training must be fun for the cat. That is very important,” she stresses.
Jesper’s adventures highlight the incredible potential of cats to be active and engaged companions in outdoor pursuits. With patience, understanding, and the right approach, many more feline friends can discover the joys of exploring the world alongside their human families.
