Doug Ingersoll: A Legacy of Integrity and Dedication in the Reined Cow Horse World

Doug Ingersoll’s lifelong journey in the reined cow horse industry is a testament to his profound skill, unwavering integrity, and deep love for horses. Founded in 1973 with his wife, Debbie, his training business in Lincoln, California, became a hub for aspiring equestrians. Ingersoll’s dedication to the sport extends beyond his personal achievements; he has significantly contributed to the industry’s growth and the development of countless horsemen and women.

A Deep-Rooted Equestrian Passion

From his early days in California, Doug Ingersoll was immersed in the world of horses. Growing up alongside his brother, Bobby Ingersoll, a fellow National Reined Cow Horse Association (NRCHA) Hall of Fame member, horses were not just a part of their lives, but a defining element. Doug’s initial aspiration to become a veterinarian led him to California Polytechnic University. While pursuing his education, he trained horses to support himself, a venture that ultimately revealed his true calling. Though he didn’t formally apprentice under the prominent horsemen of his time, such as Don Dodge, Benny Guitron, and Clyde Kennedy, he benefited greatly from their guidance and support. His talent quickly became evident as he began winning classes at the prestigious Cow Palace in Daly City, California, and leading young riders and amateurs to success. His wife, Debbie, noted his unique ability to pass on his love for horses, emphasizing the reciprocal relationship between horse and rider that Doug embodied.

Mentorship and Industry Advancement

Ingersoll’s impact resonates through his role as a mentor to many, including Sandy Collier, the first woman to win the Snaffle Bit Futurity®. His influence extends beyond individual mentorship, as he has actively supported the broader Western performance horse community. By obtaining judge’s cards in multiple associations, including serving as a 3A judge for the NRCHA, he has contributed to the fair and consistent evaluation of performance. Bill Enk, an NRCHA Director of Judges, described Ingersoll as a “force to be reckoned with” and a man who “always held true to the Vaquero traditions.” Enk further stated that Doug has been a “real true soldier as far as the horse business.”

Ingersoll’s motivation for these contributions stems from a desire to improve the industry. He believes that firsthand experience in an event is crucial for judging it effectively. “That’s the reason I did it; to make things better,” Ingersoll explained. “I think it makes a better horseman. It made me learn, learning the rules made me see the way different horses perform and made me feel what it takes to do better in the show pen.”

Beyond Wins and Earnings

While Doug Ingersoll has achieved numerous accolades, including American Quarter Horse Association championships and NRCHA winnings, his drive has never been solely about financial gain or personal victories. He emphasizes that the win itself was the true reward, not the purse. “The money at that time was not the important thing, it was the win that we liked,” he recalled. He highlights a valuable lesson learned early on: the importance of contribution to the association over monetary success. His involvement in the NRCHA Board and special committees underscores his commitment to the sport’s well-being.

A Legacy of Integrity and Respect

Doug Ingersoll’s reputation as a horseman dedicated to the success of the association first has cemented his place in the Hall of Fame. He has consistently prioritized the best interests of the horse throughout his career. His brother, Bobby, described him as a “man of integrity” who is “honest” and “treats people right with respect.” This recognition from his peers—competitors, mentees, and judges alike—is a profound acknowledgment of his character. Ingersoll himself wishes to be remembered not just for his wins, but as a man of integrity, honesty, and kindness to his horses. His enduring legacy is one of profound respect for the animal and a steadfast commitment to advancing the reined cow horse world with honor.
