Donna Scott’s life in horse racing wasn’t a planned trajectory but rather a transition born out of tragedy and nurtured by passion. Once a horsewoman from a young age, she was unexpectedly thrust into the training business after the sudden passing of her husband, Brett, in 2008. A Childhood on the Farm and Early Influences
Donna’s deep connection with horses began in her childhood on the family farm, where she was riding ponies from a very tender age. Her father, Graham Hulm, played a crucial role in her early development, schooling her in the fundamental art of horse breaking. Later, she honed her understanding of thoroughbred management under the tutelage of respected local trainer Ron Stubbs. It was within the familiar setting of Stubbs’ Albury stable that Donna met her future husband, Brett Scott. Together, Donna and Brett became proud parents to Brett Jnr and Danielle, and their family has since expanded to include four grandchildren. This decision led her to a position with the expansive Darley operation, a move that also saw her daughter, Danielle, accompany her. Donna reflects positively on this period, acknowledging its value in her development. She also touches upon Danielle’s brief but notable career as a jockey.
