Community Programs: Enhancing Safety and Engagement in Frederick

The Town of Frederick is dedicated to fostering a safe and engaged community through a variety of proactive programs. These initiatives, offered by the Frederick Police Department and other town services, aim to build stronger relationships between residents and law enforcement, deter crime, and provide valuable resources to the community. From encouraging citizens to be extra eyes and ears to offering practical safety training and facilitating crime-solving efforts, these programs empower individuals to contribute to a safer Frederick.

Community Camera Program

The Community Camera Program is a vital initiative that allows residents and businesses to voluntarily share the locations of their video surveillance systems with the Frederick Police Department. Recognizing the increasing use of video cameras for crime prevention and incident documentation, this program fosters a partnership to aid in solving crimes within the Town of Frederick. By registering their cameras, participants play a crucial role in enhancing public safety. The Frederick Police Department maintains no records of those participating in this program, ensuring privacy for all involved.

Dog Walker Watch

This program encourages dog owners to become active participants in community safety by serving as extra eyes and ears while they are out walking their dogs. To join Dog Walker Watch, interested residents must attend a brief training session with the Frederick Police Department. During this training, participants will learn essential skills, including how to identify suspicious behavior, the appropriate times to call 911, effective reporting techniques, and important safety reminders.

To be a part of the Dog Walker Watch, residents need to be aware of the following:

  • Training Sessions: Attend at least one training session. These are typically held on the last Wednesday of every month from April through September. Specific dates will be announced.
  • No Dogs Allowed: Please note that dogs are not permitted during the training sessions.

The training will cover:

  • Spotting suspicious behavior
  • Knowing when to call 911
  • Reporting tips
  • Safety reminders

This program is open to everyone, regardless of age or living situation. If you walk dogs in Frederick, this program is designed for you! Elementary School Tours

The Frederick Police Department, in collaboration with other town services, offers an immersive government experience for third and fourth-grade classes through its Elementary School Tours. These tours include educational sessions with the Frederick Police Department and the Frederick-Firestone Fire Protection District, as well as a visit to Frederick Town Hall. Students also get to explore local landmarks such as the Miners Museum, Centennial Mural, Miners Memorial, and Crist Park. FCC 711 Relay Service

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has established the 711 dialing code, a crucial service for individuals with hearing or speech impairments. This service enables users to make calls using a text telephone (TTY) or other compatible devices to connect with individuals who may or may not have such limitations. The Town of Frederick encourages those who can benefit from this service to utilize it for contacting Town Hall or the Frederick Police Department, ensuring accessible communication for all residents.

National Night Out

National Night Out is an annual event dedicated to strengthening the bond between neighbors and law enforcement, fostering a renewed sense of community. It provides an invaluable opportunity for police officers and residents to connect in a positive and supportive environment. The Frederick Police Department actively participates in National Night Out, celebrated on the first Tuesday of every August. The department expresses gratitude to the numerous volunteers and event organizers who invite them to neighborhood gatherings each year, cherishing the chance to interact with residents and families. Neighborhood Watch Meetings

The Frederick Police Department actively supports an established Neighborhood Watch organization, with dedicated block captains representing the majority of the town’s neighborhoods. These block captains serve as key points of contact for their respective areas and convene quarterly meetings with the police department. These meetings provide a forum for sharing concerns, receiving updates, and having questions answered. The schedule for 2026 Neighborhood Watch Meetings includes:

Police Department Ride-Along Program

The Frederick Police Department offers a valuable opportunity for citizens over the age of 18 to gain a better understanding of an officer’s daily duties through its Ride-Along Program. This program is designed to enhance community insight into law enforcement work. To participate, individuals must review and complete the online application form. Prescription Drug Disposal

In partnership with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE), the Police Department provides a secure and accessible method for disposing of pharmaceutical drugs. A green metal receptacle box, located in the police lobby, is available for residents to drop off both prescription and non-prescription medications. The disposal box can be accessed during regular business hours, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. While most medications can be disposed of, there are certain restrictions, such as no needles or liquids. Citizens unsure about specific items are encouraged to consult with police staff at the service window or call the Frederick Police Department at 720.382.5700.

Santa Cops Program

The Carbon Valley Santa Cops program is a heartwarming annual initiative organized by the Frederick and Firestone Police Departments. This program aims to provide gifts, essential warm winter clothing, and necessities to underprivileged children in the Carbon Valley area during the holiday season. Made possible by the generosity of local businesses and individuals who donate gifts and funds each fall, the program ensures that children and families in need receive support. In early December, after all the shopping is completed, volunteers and local officers collaborate for a day of gift wrapping before the presents are delivered to the children.

Self-Defense Classes

Throughout the year, the Frederick Police Department offers Level 1 and Level 2 Self-Defense Classes exclusively for Town of Frederick residents. Women aged 15 and older who have not previously taken these classes are eligible to participate. A sign-up form is available for individuals interested in being contacted about future course offerings.

It is necessary to attend only one Level 1 class; however, completion of Level 1 is a prerequisite for enrolling in Level 2. Level 1 classes encompass valuable classroom-style instruction covering awareness and preventative measures, followed by practical, basic physical self-defense techniques. Level 2 classes build upon situational awareness and delve deeper into hands-on physical self-defense. Participants are encouraged to engage as much as they feel comfortable, making the classes accessible regardless of physical ability. Vacation House Watch Program

To help ensure the security of homes while residents are away on vacation, the Frederick Police Department offers a Vacation House Watch program. While this service does not guarantee against burglary, it aims to detect any issues promptly. The consistent police presence in a neighborhood can also serve as a deterrent to potential criminal activity. To utilize this program, residents need to fill out the Vacation House Watch form.
