Our Journey So Far
Diablo Dog began with a simple passion for animals and a vision to provide exceptional pet services. Founded by Matt Heikkila, the company has grown from its roots in dog walking to offering a comprehensive suite of services including grooming, training, and pet photography. Our commitment is to provide the highest quality care, ensuring that every pet is treated as if they were our own. We pride ourselves on building a team of dedicated professionals who share this philosophy.
Matt’s journey into the animal care industry started from a young age, inspired by a childhood encounter with an injured snake that ignited his desire to help animals. This led him to Moorpark College, where he gained hands-on experience with a diverse range of species, from mountain lions to baboons. His early career included working with tigers at an amusement park, honing his skills in animal husbandry, training, and care. Later, he transitioned to dog walking services in Alameda County before launching Diablo Dog in 2013. Over the past decade, Diablo Dog has expanded its reach across Contra Costa County, driven by a growing team of passionate individuals. The opening of a storefront in 2023 further broadened our offerings to include grooming, training, and retail, with pet photography being added in 2024.

Anthony Travaglini: Certified Dog Trainer
Anthony brings a wealth of knowledge and a positive reinforcement-based training philosophy to Diablo Dog. He is a certified professional dog trainer (CPDT-KA) and has successfully worked with over 100 clients on various behavioral issues, including obedience, reactivity, and socialization. Anthony offers private sessions, group classes, and our immersive “Day Academy” program. His expertise was recognized when he helped Diablo Dog earn “Best Dog Trainer” in Diablo Magazine’s 2024 Best of the East Bay awards.
Phil Carrera: Expert Dog Groomer
Phil is a seasoned groomer with years of experience, including owning his own mobile grooming business. As an avid dog lover with multiple furry companions at home, he understands the importance of gentle and effective grooming. Phil’s addition to the Diablo Dog team has expanded our grooming services throughout Contra Costa County, ensuring your pets receive the highest standard of care and a fresh, clean look.
John Prelock: Dedicated Dog Walker
John joined Diablo Dog in 2018 and has been a cornerstone of our dog walking services ever since. He has a special connection with the dogs he walks, often taking out exclusive groups who adore his professional and friendly demeanor. John’s commitment and love for the canine companions are evident in every walk.
Michael Camara: Calm and Controlled Dog Walker
Mike, who joined us in 2018, brings a calm and controlled approach to dog walking. Despite balancing his education at UC Berkeley, he dedicates his part-time availability to providing excellent off-leash group walks. Mike has a particular talent for working with dogs that require a more gentle and understanding handler.
Matt Jolly: Thoughtful Dog Walker
Since starting in 2022, Matt has become known for his thoughtful approach to dog walking. He possesses a keen eye for observing subtle changes in a dog’s behavior, ensuring their well-being and enjoyment during every outing. His clients and their dogs truly appreciate his attentiveness and care.
Pamela Wilde: Energetic Dog Walker
Pamela joined Diablo Dog in 2023, bringing a background of extensive neighborhood walking and a vibrant energy to her role. Her clients’ dogs eagerly anticipate her energetic walks, often forming a line behind her. Pamela also provides valuable support with weekend walks and transportation for grooming appointments.
Angela Dorsey: Professional Dog Walker
Angela, a small business owner herself, joined our team in 2024. With prior experience at another dog training company, she brings a high level of professionalism and skill to her dog walking services. Angela’s meticulous nature ensures that every dog in her care receives exceptional attention.
Cortney Johnson: Experienced Dog Walker
Cortney joined Diablo Dog in 2024, bringing experience from leading group hikes in San Francisco and previously running a dog rescue. His background makes him exceptionally well-suited for our group hiking and walking services. Cortney is a dedicated “dog guy” ready to responsibly care for your pets.
Joey Damianakes: Creative Dog Walker and Photographer
Joey, who also joined us in 2024, is a creative individual with a passion for capturing memorable moments. Having grown up raising guide dog puppies, he possesses extensive experience and a natural talent for working with dogs. Joey is also collaborating on the development of our dog photography studio, promising exciting new services in the future.
Jake Heikkila: Store Manager
Jake has been an integral part of Diablo Dog since the store’s opening in 2023. He also provided valuable support in caring for clients’ dogs when Matt was away prior to the store’s establishment. Jake is often the friendly voice on the phone and the welcoming face at our store, ensuring smooth operations and excellent customer service.
