Every dog owner with a power chewer knows the struggle: a new toy, brimming with promise, reduced to mere fragments within minutes. The sigh of desperation is all too familiar as another “indestructible” toy fails to live up to its name. At Dog Care Story, and especially within our extended family at the Benafim Dog Shelter, we understand this challenge intimately. Having tested hundreds of toys with our resident experts – the dogs themselves – we’ve learned a thing or two about what truly stands up to the most enthusiastic gnawing. This article delves into our honest, paws-on reviews of several popular “indestructible” dog toys, putting them through rigorous testing with extreme chewers like Nero, Max, Maya, Black Nero, Jean, and Pebbles. Our goal is to help you find the best dog chew toy for extreme chewers that will offer lasting enjoyment and mental stimulation, saving you from constant disappointment and wasted money.

Real, Honest, and Reliable Reviews From Our Canine Experts – Benafim Shelter Dogs

We meticulously selected five supposedly indestructible toys to test over a week. These included the Nylabone Extreme Tough Dog Chew Toy, the Kong Rewards Ball, the CyunCmay Indestructible Dog Toy Bone, the Hetoo Indestructible Squeaky Dental Care Dog Toy, and the Kong Wobbler. Our dogs chewed, played, stared with wide eyes, took them into water, buried them, and unearthed them again, putting each toy through its paces with their unique chewing styles. What follows is their unfiltered feedback – diplomacy, as you might expect, isn’t their strongest suit!

Nylabone Extreme Tough Dog Chew Toy

The Nylabone Extreme Tough Dog Chew Toy, specifically the XXL Bison-flavored variant, claims to be perfect for the most powerful chewers and dogs over 23kg. Our 9-year-old Pitt Bull, Nero, who we often joke is more intelligent than our entire human team combined, spent hours vigorously chewing this toy. Remarkably, it barely showed a mark. Its substantial size still felt light enough for dogs to carry comfortably in their mouths, and the slightly curved design made it easy for them to grip with their paws, enhancing the chewing experience.

Maya, a 3-year-old dog unaccustomed to toys due to her past, immediately took a liking to the Nylabone. There were no confused looks or uncertainty; she was instantly engaged, enjoying a good chew and running around with it in her mouth, even enticing Max to chase her. This toy proved to be a hit even with dogs new to play.

One of the significant advantages for human owners is its ease of cleaning, provided you can retrieve it from an enthusiastic dog. Furthermore, the Nylabone maintains its flavor indefinitely, ensuring long-term appeal. For those who dislike mess and odors, this toy is a dream, as it produces none.

Black Nero, a Cane Corso cross known for his incredibly powerful chewing—capable of shredding a tree trunk as if it were cake—also put this Nylabone to the ultimate test. When anxious or left alone, he has even bent strong fencing material. Yet, this Nylabone proved to be “Black Nero proof.” After countless hours of chewing, there was barely a tooth mark, confirming its suitability for strong toys for dogs that chew. He genuinely enjoyed it, too.

The Nylabone Extreme Tough Dog Chew Toy comes bison-flavored throughout (also available in chicken and turkey), encouraging dogs to chew. Its raised nubs are designed to help clean teeth and gums. Made from safe, non-toxic material, it measures 30.48 x 13.97 x 5.08 cm and weighs 485 grams, designed for dogs over 23 kg. Every dog at the shelter wholeheartedly recommends this Nylabone. Their collective advice: if your dog loves to chew, gets bored easily, and needs something truly tasty and durable, this is the toy for them.

Kong Rewards Ball

The Kong Rewards Ball initially received a less enthusiastic reception from our canine reviewers compared to some other toys. However, this reaction was short-lived. The concept of combining a toy for play with a treat dispenser is clever, keeping dogs amused for hours. From a human perspective, inserting treats was incredibly simple. Unlike some other treat dispensers, it didn’t require excessive brainpower or effort for the dogs to successfully retrieve their rewards.

However, the dogs seemed to prefer the squishy, soft, and bouncy side of the toy more than its treat-dispensing function. Jean, in particular, absolutely adored this toy. He would chew on its rubbery side for hours before burying it and then eagerly finding it again, much to the dismay of his best friend Komo, who couldn’t get a look in.

From the massive Jambo to the tiny Star, every single dog at the shelter played and chewed with the Kong Rewards Ball. Not a single tooth mark was found, nor were any treats left inside, clearly demonstrating its effectiveness as a simple treat dispenser. This robust toy is made from long-lasting Kong rubber.

The Kong Rewards Ball measures 12.7 x 12.7 x 12.07 cm and weighs 417 grams, suitable for dogs weighing 16 kg and above. The dogs concluded that this is an excellent all-around toy, perfectly blending their favorite activities: play and food. It’s a durable and tough toy that can withstand extensive chewing, bouncing, and interactive play, all while providing a straightforward and effective treat-dispensing experience. CyunCmay Indestructible Dog Toy XL Bone

The CyunCmay Indestructible Dog Toy XL Bone sparked the most initial excitement among our dogs upon unwrapping. Sadly, this excitement was abruptly cut short once Black Nero got his paws and teeth on it. While he had a tremendous amount of fun for about 30 minutes, engaging in tug-of-war with its end handles, enjoying a good chew, and retrieving it from the lake, the toy’s soft, rubbery, and pliable material raised our concerns about its durability under extreme testing.

Nero, our chief tester, unfortunately proved our fears correct. Within just 30 minutes, the “indestructible” bone showed significant teeth marks and was almost split in two. This clearly indicated that despite its claims, it was not suited for extreme chewers.

The CyunCmay Indestructible Dog Toy XL Bone measures 32.9 x 12.2 x 3.8 cm and weighs 330 grams. It is made from TPR environmentally friendly material, free from chemical smells, and is safe and non-toxic. Its surface is designed to help clean a dog’s teeth and control plaque and tartar. While described as strong and durable for medium to large dogs, our tests revealed otherwise.

In summary, although the CyunCmay toy provided short-lived fun for retrieving and playing, it failed miserably as a durable chew toy for powerful dogs. Our dogs were visibly disappointed when their enjoyment with this toy ended so quickly. If you are specifically looking for the most durable chew toys for dogs, this one does not fit the bill.

HETOO Indestructible Squeaky Dental Care Dog Toy

The HETOO Indestructible Squeaky Dental Care Dog Toy, primarily designed for dental cleaning, was met with perplexing lack of enthusiasm from our expert canine reviewers. Even its squeak, which is often a strong motivator for dogs, failed to excite them. Maya, initially, even ran and hid when confronted with the strange noise from the odd-looking red object. However, being the brave girl she is, Maya eventually mustered the courage to inspect it for a few moments.

To try and make this “toy” more appealing, we smeared peanut butter into its grooves, hoping to encourage our reviewers to chew. This strategy managed to keep Maya interested for a few minutes before she predictably wandered off, leaving the toy behind. Black Nero and Maya were the only ones who showed any interest, and even their engagement was very brief.

Made from natural rubber, the HETOO toy measures 12.7 x 12.7 x 12.07 cm and weighs 417 grams. The primary takeaway from our review is that this toy simply didn’t excite or entertain our dogs for more than a few minutes. And yes, it squeaks—annoyingly so for us humans! It’s clear that while the intention was good for dental care, its appeal as a toy for extreme chewers or even general play was minimal.

Kong Wobbler Interactive Treat Dispensing Dog Toy

The dogs’ initial reaction to the Kong Wobbler Interactive Treat Dispensing Dog Toy was quite amusing. Its large size led to a flurry of confused looks, as if they were pondering, “Is it a bird, a plane, or a UFO?” Unlike many other Kong treat toys, this one is made from a harder plastic polymer rather than rubber. From a human perspective, the twist-off lid makes it incredibly easy to fill with treats.

However, our canine experts initially struggled with this toy. While they clearly wanted to play with it (except for our sweet Kilo, who was utterly perplexed by this wobbly red object) and understood there were treats inside, they couldn’t figure out how to get them out. It took the human team a moment to realize that the Kong Wobbler performs best on smooth surfaces, not the pebbly stone found in their kennels. We also quickly learned that the treat size needed to be compatible with the dispenser hole—a classic “Doh!” moment.

Pebbles, a light brown dog, is pushing a red Kong Wobbler with her nose on a smooth surfacePebbles, a light brown dog, is pushing a red Kong Wobbler with her nose on a smooth surface

Once these minor adjustments were made—the dogs understood how it worked, and we humans learned about surface and treat compatibility—the Kong Wobbler was a huge hit. Its large size makes it difficult for dogs to pick up in their mouths, which is actually a positive, as it reduces the chance of them sinking their teeth in and potentially destroying it. The Kong Wobbler is made from a durable plastic polymer, measuring 13 x 19 cm in diameter, and weighs 485 grams, designed for dogs 12 kg and above with a maximum filling capacity of 250 grams.

According to our dogs, this toy is indeed indestructible and easy to use, once the initial learning curve is overcome. It provides great mental stimulation and slows down eating, making it an excellent option for interactive play and prolonged engagement. This makes it one of the best dog toys for large dogs who also need mental stimulation.

Conclusion – Our Dog’s Verdict on Dog Chew Toys for Extreme Chewers

After extensive discussions, numerous serious-looking meetings, and a cacophony of barks and happy wagging tails, our expert canine review panel has reached its final verdict on these five “indestructible” toys, specifically in the context of Dog Chew Toys For Extreme Chewers.

While the CyunCmay Indestructible Dog Toy XL Bone and the HETOO Indestructible Squeaky Dental Care Dog Toy unfortunately fell short of their “indestructible” claims and failed to hold the interest of our powerful chewers, the other three truly stood out.

For the ultimate chewing experience and durability against even the most relentless gnawers, the Nylabone Extreme Tough Dog Chew Toy (Monster Bison Bone, XXL) takes the top spot. It survived Black Nero’s formidable jaws and kept all our dogs engaged for extended periods, offering both satisfaction and dental benefits with its textured surface and long-lasting flavor. This is an absolute must-have for owners of dogs that really love to chew.

For dogs that enjoy a combination of play and treats, the KONG Rewards Ball proved to be an excellent choice. Its durable Kong rubber construction stood up to vigorous chewing and bouncing, while its simple treat-dispensing mechanism kept dogs entertained and rewarded. It’s a fantastic interactive toy for prolonged engagement.

Lastly, the KONG Wobbler Interactive Treat Dispensing Dog Toy (for Medium/Large Dogs) is a brilliant interactive toy that promotes slower eating and mental stimulation. Once dogs (and their humans) understand how it works best, its hard plastic polymer construction proves to be truly indestructible, providing hours of rewarding fun without succumbing to powerful jaws.

When seeking dog chew toys for extreme chewers, remember that true indestructibility is rare. However, options like the Nylabone Extreme Tough, Kong Rewards Ball, and Kong Wobbler come remarkably close, offering durability, engagement, and value for money. Always supervise your dog with new toys and choose products specifically designed for their chewing intensity. Find the perfect toy for your furry friend to keep them happy, stimulated, and to give your wallet a much-needed break!
