An Interview with Cole Cameron: A Legacy of Horsemanship and Rodeo

This article delves into the remarkable life and career of Cole Cameron, a distinguished figure in the world of rodeo and horsemanship. Raised in the rich cowboy and western tradition, Cole’s journey is a testament to dedication, athletic prowess, and a deep-rooted family legacy in the equine industry. This discussion offers insights into his upbringing, his achievements in rodeo, and his current endeavors as a respected horse trainer and clinician.

A Foundation in the Western Way of Life

Cole Cameron’s story is intrinsically linked to the cowboy lifestyle. Born in Arizona and nurtured in Texas, he is the son of Craig Cameron, a world champion and Hall of Fame cowboy. Cole’s formative years were spent on family ranches across Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. This environment fostered not only his athletic abilities but also a strong work ethic. Academically, Cole excelled as a student and as a three-sport athlete in high school, earning accolades in football and leading his team to a state championship. His athletic achievements earned him a scholarship to play college football at Texas A&M University.

Transitioning to Rodeo Excellence

Upon completing his bachelor’s degree in Agriculture at Texas A&M, Cole continued his education while pursuing a rodeo scholarship. He became a member of the Texas A&M rodeo team, where he competed for two years and qualified for the College National Finals in Casper, Wyoming, on two occasions. This collegiate success paved the way for his professional rodeo career. In 2011, Cole achieved a significant milestone by winning the Cowboys Professional Rodeo Association in Steer Wrestling.

A Master of Modern Horsemanship

Beyond his rodeo accomplishments, Cole Cameron has established himself as a highly competitive team roper. He continuously refines his skills, working with top horse trainers across various disciplines, including cutting, team roping, and reined cow horse. His expertise is sought after at numerous horse expos, and he travels both nationally and internationally, conducting horsemanship clinics. These clinics aim to empower individuals to develop exceptional horses and master the art of horsemanship.

Cole’s significant achievements extend to colt starting. In 2020, he was crowned the EXCA Futurity World Champion. The following year, he secured a victory in the prestigious Wild Card competition at the Road to the Horse colt starting event in Fort Worth, Texas. His continued dedication is evident as he prepared to compete for the 2022 RTTH World Championship title in Lexington, Kentucky. Raised immersed in the discipline of colt starting, Cole embodies the “gold standard,” a tradition passed down through generations of the Cameron family. His philosophy is simple yet profound: “From good beginnings, good things tend to come naturally.”
