Hello, Mama Suna’s blog readers! I’m Vlassic, and for the past two years, I’ve called Hermits’ Rest Ranch my home. You might be wondering what makes this place so special. Well, let me tell you about my exciting days here! Despite my long body, my long legs allow me to jump high, and I have a wonderful array of friends.
At night, I snuggle up in Jim’s RV. He’s incredibly kind and always makes sure I have food. I don’t go into the main house because Penney tends to act strangely in there. When I venture outside, I divide my time between my feathered companions—Bertie Lee, Gertie, Fancy Pants, and Clarence—and my new buddies, the bull calves. It’s an absolute blast! The calves’ poop is surprisingly delicious, and their water bucket is the perfect size for me to cool off my black coat.
The black chickens aren’t too fond of me, but the rest of my avian friends welcome me. With the bull calves, I enjoy their company, especially splashing in their generously sized water bucket and sampling their… unique dietary offerings. It’s always an adventure exploring the ranch.
On particularly nice days, Mama Suna takes me along to visit my other friends. Sometimes we travel in a small, bumpy car, but tonight, we enjoyed a leisurely walk under the beautiful sky. I couldn’t resist chasing a couple of the 18 series cows, just a little, as a reminder of our playful days when they were calves. For the most part, I behaved well, eager to see my friends.
Here you can see two of my friends, Big Red and Apache. The horse seems a bit jealous because the hen gets fed first. I absolutely adore this place! The air is filled with the distinct scents of cattle dogs, signaling to other canine visitors that Vlassic is the ruler of this domain… at least when they aren’t around.
There are many other intriguing smells to investigate, and I have a particular fondness for donkey poop. Thanks for the treat, Fiona! I was a bit disappointed she couldn’t join me for some playtime, as I do enjoy making her lower her head and shake it.
I really do love poop! It makes me wonder why Mama Suna bothers sweeping it up. Another fantastic amenity at my friends’ place is an even larger water tub. I love to swim in it, though not when it’s completely full. Big Red and I enjoy drinking from it when it’s brimming with water!
After all my friends were fed, we headed back. I felt compelled to investigate a new type of hay. It had a peculiar look and an unusual smell. Mama Suna explained it was sorghum, though I’m not quite sure what that is. I made sure to leave my mark on it, ensuring it wouldn’t smell so “new” the next time I visit.
As we passed the cabin, Copper the dog emerged, prompting me to bolt like the wind. Meanwhile, Mama Suna spotted a fresh cow patty on the road that hadn’t been there earlier. As she approached, she realized it was a turtle making its way across the driveway. She offered it a greeting, but for reasons unknown, she didn’t call me over to be introduced! Honestly, I’m friendly with all the other animals!
After indulging in a bit of silage rolling—an acquired taste, but one I’ve certainly acquired—I raced back to Rip, Poop Nugget, and Buster, curious if they had produced any more delightful surprises. We were just relaxing and digesting. Then, to cap off the evening perfectly, Lee and the other dogs arrived! We had a grand time playing. A light rain began to fall, not quite enough, but it brought smiles to Lee and Suna’s faces. We’re in dire need of rain, as my pond has completely disappeared! It was time to head inside.
